Longevity of Clay

People have asked me what it is about clay that I love so much.  There are many reasons why I love to play in the “Mud”.  One of them being the longevity that it offers to my art.  There is a story in one of our local newspapers about a discovery made recently in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.  1000 years ago someone set a ceramic bowl down under the cover of a boulder and this man found it.  While the bowl was not in perfect condition it is still in the form of a bowl.  It is amazing to me to think of the hands that created it, to try and imagine what they thought while making the pot and question if they thought about how long it might be around.  Most other art mediums are so temporary compared to the potential life of a ceramic object.

I have always wanted to create something lasting that would live on long beyond my own mortal lifespan.  a 1000 years from now someone could come across one of my sculptures or wheel thrown vessels and wonder at it the same way I wonder at the object found in the forest.  It is inspiring to me.

The story can be found here.

Shooting Clay

The show is over and now it is time to shoot the work.  Okay its not what you think.  Garrett and I are in the lighting studio taking portfolio shots of our work.  It is one of the last steps of our show; having to document it and then turn in a CD to Mark Talbert.

Well I started writing this while we were in the studio, but I have subsequently finished taking and editing all of my pictures and have posted them on the BFA show page.  I have high-resolution images if you want them.  You will need to email me and I will get them to you.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our show a success.  Thank you to all who traveled to see the show, some came great distances to support me and I really appreciate it.

The show was a great success.

The Show Must Go On

The BFA show has now been up for a week.  We have had some pretty good feedback and the opening reception went well last night.  Thank you to those who were able to attend.  For those who couldn’t you missed a great time.  The show will be up for another week, through the 19th of November.  For those who are too far away I have posted picture of my work in the gallery, they can be seen here.  Or you can click on the link to the right.
